Something about Cavallino Rufolino
As part of the program for the wide scale project tagged, “Sogni e bisogni”(dreams and needs), a lecture meeting took place on the 14th of march in this facility for the first and second year students of our hotel management institute with a representative of two associations that handle the protection and breeding of Monterufoli's mini horses.
The mission of the two associations is to attract youths to the equestrian world through two different activities: the breeding and welfare of the mini horses inside the horse training centre and its daily activities, and also the use of the horses for sporting events(steeple chase jumping, gig racing and horse therapy).
On this basis, courses are organized for youths of 7-8 years of age and disabled children.
During the meeting the history of the mini horse was recounted, that it had its origin in 1913 when the countess of Gherardesca, Ugolino's wife, saved eleven mini horses left in the Tuscan territory from the slaughter by taking them to her ranch and crossbreeding them with other breeds in order to perfect and save their species.
Successively, various standard characteristics of the breed were listed and described, features which the new born and growing colts are to bear. Among the most significant are: the neck height which ought not to be more than 140cm and the mantle colour which must be night shade or dark bay.
